Gov Sanwo-Olu Attends 50th Anniversary of General Murtala Muhammed's Death

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony on Friday, honoring the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (GCFR).

The event, held as part of nationwide commemorative activities organized throughout February 2026 by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, paid tribute to the late general's remarkable life, visionary leadership, and lasting contributions to Nigeria.

General Murtala Muhammed served as Head of State from July 1975 until his tragic assassination on February 13, 1976, in a failed coup attempt in Ikoyi, Lagos. During his brief but impactful seven-month tenure, he implemented bold reforms, including restructuring the civil service, creating new states, combating corruption, and laying groundwork for a return to civilian rule after taking power in a bloodless coup against General Yakubu Gowon.

The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths at a cenotaph in his memory, attended by several dignitaries. Among those present were Senator Daisy Danjuma (wife of retired Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma), Dr. Aisha Muhammed Oyebode (daughter of the late General and CEO of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation) and her husband Gbenga Oyebode, as well as Hon. Bola Oladunjoye, Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, alongside other officials and guests.

The 50th anniversary observances, which include exhibitions, policy dialogues, memorial gatherings, and additional wreath-laying events, aim to reflect on General Muhammed's enduring legacy and his influence on Nigeria's history and governance.
