A convoy carrying the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully thwarted a deadly ambush attempt by suspected Lakurawa terrorists near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.
The incident unfolded as the high-profile convoy was travelling to visit frontline troops deployed in the state. Gunmen concealed in the forested area opened fire on the convoy in a bid to carry out an attack.
Troops in the convoy responded immediately with superior firepower, repelling the assailants and neutralizing five of the terrorists on the spot.
A follow-up clearance operation in the vicinity yielded a significant haul of weapons, ammunition, and other items recovered from the scene:
One OJC gun
One PKT gun
Two AK-47 rifles
Four AK-47 magazines
A bandolier loaded with PKT ammunition
Several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition
Five motorcycles
Two mobile phones
One camel bag containing ₦840,000 in cash
The successful defence and recovery operation underscores the alertness and combat readiness of troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA in countering emerging threats from groups such as Lakurawa in the North West region.
No casualties were reported among the military personnel in the convoy. Security forces continue to dominate the area to prevent any follow-up attacks and to pursue fleeing elements.
Further details on the identities of the neutralized terrorists or additional intelligence gathered are expected as investigations progress.
