FG, Yobe Govt Distribute 3,500 Clean Cooking Stoves to Curb Deforestation

The Federal Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the Yobe State Government, has begun distributing 3,500 locally produced clean cooking stoves to vulnerable households across all 17 local government areas of the state.

The distribution exercise was formally launched at the Yobe State Ministry of Environment along Gujba Road, Damaturu, as part of efforts to combat deforestation, address climate change, and promote safer, more efficient household cooking practices.

Speaking at the event, Yobe State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, described climate change driven largely by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities as a pressing global crisis that demands immediate and collective response.

He highlighted that the initiative falls under the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, which is providing clean and efficient cooking stoves to help Nigeria meet its emission reduction commitments as outlined in the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

“The distribution of these stoves is a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s resolve to tackle climate change while improving the quality of life for our people,” the commissioner said.

Alhaji Karasuwa added that the Yobe State Government is reinforcing the national effort through its Alternative Energy Programme.

He recalled that the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni had earlier procured and freely distributed 1,000 units of 6kg gas cylinders, 500 Jiko-Koa stoves, 500 Save80 stoves, and 500 Munco stoves to households statewide to cut down on emissions from traditional cooking methods.

The commissioner congratulated the beneficiaries selected for this phase of the Presidential Initiative and urged them to use the stoves responsibly.

He emphasized the multiple benefits, including protecting women’s health by reducing exposure to harmful indoor air pollution, easing pressure on the state’s forest resources, and contributing to environmental conservation.

Permanent Secretary of the Yobe State Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Maidala Beleri Bularafa, commended the Federal Government for the timely intervention and assured that the state would continue to support such sustainable initiatives.

The clean cooking stoves, developed using local technology, are expected to significantly reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal, thereby helping to slow deforestation in Yobe State while promoting cleaner household energy use.
