The Federal Government is set to accelerate the implementation of the National Ranching Policy to boost livestock production, curb insecurity, and drive economic growth, according to the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha.
The Minister made the disclosure during a stakeholder engagement on livestock production held in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.Aisha Abubakar-Yahaya reports that despite Nigeria’s vast potential in livestock, the sector has long suffered from poor coordination and underperformance.
This changed in 2024 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development.Minister Maiha said the ministry is now driving targeted policies to raise the livestock sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP from the current $32 billion to $74 billion.
Key initiatives include the establishment of National Livestock Centres. These centres are designed to enhance livestock production across value chains, strengthen food security, and help resolve the persistent farmers-herders conflicts.
The Minister also attended a poultry summit and inspected several animal feed mills in Kwara State, where he emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to build a sustainable and globally competitive agricultural sector in Nigeria.
