Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized the Federal Government for spending billions of naira to renovate the International Conference Centre in Abuja while primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) remain closed due to an ongoing teachers' strike.
In a post on his official X account, Obi described the situation as "worrisome" and "particularly tragic" in the nation's capital, where children are denied education amid insecurity and industrial actions.
He contrasted the lavish expenditure on the conference centre for presidential use and bus terminals with the neglect of basic education, which he called a cornerstone of national development.
Obi questioned whether leaders truly value education's role, noting that countless children are out of school across Nigeria.
The strike has left FCT primary schools shuttered, highlighting misplaced priorities in public spending.
