FG Concessions Ikere Gorge Dam to Private Firm for 6MW Hydropower Generation

The Federal Government has officially concessioned the 6MW Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant in Iseyin, Oyo State, to Messrs Quaint Power and Infrastructure Nigeria under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

The handover ceremony was jointly performed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Prof. Utsev described the concession as a major step forward in the government’s efforts to close infrastructure financing gaps and boost sustainable power generation through greater private sector involvement.

He praised the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) for ensuring transparency, value for money, and efficiency in PPP projects, and stressed the need to harness private sector expertise and capital to support public investments.

The Minister highlighted that the Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant resulted from long-term collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Federal Ministry of Power, which began in 2012 to tap into Nigeria’s abundant hydropower potential.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to private sector-led growth in the energy sector, calling the concession a new chapter in sustainable energy development.

He noted that the Ikere Gorge Dam, originally built for water supply and irrigation, is now being repurposed as a key facility for generating clean, renewable electricity.

The move is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s renewable energy goals and improve power supply reliability in the region.
