Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN) has asserted that ordinary Nigerians expressed their true will in the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, dismissing various groups and individuals who claim to represent the wider population.
In a post on X on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Keyamo reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s congratulations to the election winners by emphasizing that the ballot box rather than media appearances, protests, or commentary revealed the genuine voice of the people.
“The real Nigerians have now spoken for themselves; not those who pose for cameras in front of the National Assembly, claiming to speak for Nigerians; not some funny journalists who don’t know the polling units in their villages, seated comfortably in some studios and claiming to speak for Nigerians; and not the clueless opposition claiming to speak for Nigerians,” he wrote.
Keyamo argued that while everyone is free to hold and express opinions, no one should presume to speak for all Nigerians without clear evidence.
“Everyone or any group have a right to their opinions, but NEVER claim to speak for ‘Nigerians’ when there is no yardstick to ascertain your claim,” he continued.
“When you make your point, clearly state it is your own belief or the position of your NGO or organisation, but do not pose as some Voltron defending majority of ‘Nigerians’. That is just my point.”
The minister’s remarks appear to defend the legitimacy of the FCT electoral process and highlight voter participation as the authentic measure of public sentiment, amid ongoing national political discussions.
The statement quoted a Channels Television report on President Tinubu congratulating winners in the FCT polls, as well as by-elections in Rivers and Kano states.
Keyamo’s comments have generated mixed reactions online, with some users commending the call for accountable representation and others criticizing it as an attempt to delegitimize opposition voices.
