Farmers, Herders Sign 25 Peace Pacts To End Killings In Plateau Communities

Farmers and herders in Plateau State have signed 25 peace agreements aimed at ending recurring killings and violence in the Bokkos and Riyom local government areas.

The pacts involve communities from six rural areas, including Sha, Bum, and Sopp in Bokkos, as well as locations in Riyom. These regions have experienced prolonged conflicts, resulting in numerous deaths, widespread destruction of property, and displacement among both farming and herding groups.

The agreements were reached after a series of dialogue and reconciliation sessions facilitated by relevant stakeholders. Both men and women from the affected communities participated, underscoring a collective commitment to restoring calm and fostering coexistence.

The initiatives come amid ongoing tensions in Plateau State, where farmer-herder disputes often tied to competition over land, water, and grazing routes have led to cycles of violence. Local leaders and participants expressed hope that these accords will help prevent further bloodshed and promote sustainable peace in the region.

This development is seen as a positive step toward addressing one of Nigeria's persistent communal challenges in the Middle Belt.
