An Arik Air Boeing 737-700 aircraft (registration 5N-MJF), operating flight W3 740 from Lagos to Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA), was safely diverted to Benin Airport today after the crew heard a loud bang from the left engine during descent.
The incident occurred as a precautionary measure, in line with standard aviation safety protocols. The plane landed without issue, and all passengers (reportedly around 80) and crew disembarked unharmed. No injuries or further complications were reported.
Arik Air's Public Relations & Communications Manager, Adebanji Ola, confirmed the event in an official statement:
“Arik Air’s Boeing 737-700 (5N-MJF) aircraft operating flight W3 740 from Lagos to Port Harcourt today, February 11, 2026, diverted to Benin Airport after the operating crew heard a loud bang on the left engine. The aircraft was on its descent to Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa when the incident happened and as a precautionary measure, the crew had to make a safe diversion to Benin.”
The airline emphasized that the diversion was handled safely and professionally. Updates on the aircraft's status and any passenger re-accommodation were not detailed in initial reports, but the focus remained on passenger safety.
