FAAN Updates on Fire Incident at Lagos Airport Terminal 1


The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has provided an update on a fire outbreak that occurred earlier on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Terminal 1 (the old international terminal) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.


The fire was first noticed around 3:25 PM (15:25 hours) on the first floor, possibly originating from the server room according to preliminary findings. 


Heavy smoke caused rowdiness and prompted an immediate response.


FAAN's Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) activated standard safety protocols swiftly, with coordinated efforts from multiple agencies including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, and others. 


Mutual aid was called in to support containment.Key points from FAAN's statements:

No fatalities were recorded.

Six people (three males and three females) sustained injuries and are in stable condition, receiving treatment at the FAAN Clinic.

All individuals initially trapped (up to 14 reported in some updates) were safely evacuated.

Emergency operations focused on firefighting, rescue, and recovery remained active into the evening, with the fire being brought under control through combined efforts.

Some flights, including Lufthansa and at least two others, were temporarily diverted (e.g., to Malabo).

The airspace and terminal operations have since reopened, with FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku confirming that all flights are back on schedule.

FAAN reassured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property, and investigations into the cause are ongoing.
