El-Rufai Persecuted Me, Organised My Abduction Over Deleted Tweet – Audu Maikori

Audu Maikori, founder and chairman of Chocolate City Entertainment Group, has leveled serious allegations against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, claiming the ex-governor persecuted him over an inaccurate social media post from 2017 that he promptly corrected and removed.

In a recent interview on Arise Television's Prime Time program where he exercised his right of reply following an earlier appearance by El-Rufai Maikori described the incident as personal persecution rather than legitimate prosecution.

He explained that the controversy stemmed from a tweet about violence in Southern Kaduna, in which he reported unverified information about deaths during clashes. According to Maikori, once he realized the tweet contained false details—provided misleadingly by his driver he immediately took corrective action. "The minute I found the tweet was wrong, was false, I went to the first police station available, which was in Lekki, with my driver, and wrote a statement," he said.

His driver later confessed to fabricating the information, reportedly for personal gain. Maikori stated that authorities, including the police, handled the matter professionally and released him after the initial arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) on February 18, 2017.

However, he alleged that El-Rufai continued to pursue him aggressively. "A governor shouldn’t do the job of the police," Maikori emphasized. "I was let go by the police, and the next weekend, El-Rufai was trying to link my tweet with the possible death of 7 people."

He went further, accusing the former governor of organizing his subsequent abduction. "El-Rufai persecuted me for a wrong tweet I acknowledged and took down. He organised for me to be abducted," Maikori asserted, distinguishing the experience from standard legal processes by calling it outright persecution affecting him and others.

The allegations revive a long-standing feud tied to the 2017 Southern Kaduna violence, where Maikori's posts drew sharp criticism from El-Rufai, who labeled them inflammatory and potentially inciting. Maikori has previously referenced court rulings declaring his 2017 detention unlawful.

El-Rufai has not publicly responded to the latest claims as of the time this report. The incident highlights ongoing tensions around free speech, governance, and accountability in Nigeria's political landscape.
