Deyemi Okanlawon defends Simi, says anti-r@pe message shouldn’t be deflected

Actor Deyemi Okanlawon has publicly supported singer Simi as controversy continues to trail her comments on r@pe, stating that calls to end sexu@l violence against women should not be met with deflection.

Taking to X, on Monday, Deyemi wrote: “When women say ‘STOP rap*ng women’… Your response cannot be ‘what abt men/children’ neither can it be ‘what abt false accusers’ nor anything else. Your reply MUST only be YES!!! You can start your own separate conversation about anything else at another time/place.”

His comment comes amid heated online reactions to Simi’s firm stance against r@pe, which resurfaced alongside old tweets that critics have circulated in recent days.

The renewed scrutiny followed her vocal position on s£xual ass@ult and the ongoing controversy surrounding a r@pe allegation involving Mirabel.

Earlier, Simi addressed the backlash, explaining that the resurfaced posts were written 14 years ago when she was 23 and assisting at her mother’s daycare while pursuing her music career. She maintained that the tweets reflected everyday experiences at the time and were never intended to be inappropriate.

“I haven’t been on Twitter today but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it. 14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she said.

Simi stressed that she has “never been depraved” and reiterated that she has consistently spoken against r@pe and sexu@l assault, long before gaining fame. According to her, some of the old tweets are being removed by her team due to the sensitivity of the situation for her family, though she initially did not want them deleted.

“I have always spoken against r@pe and sexu@l as$ault even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am… I said stop r@ping women. I stand by it,” she added.
