Cross River APC Apologises for Inviting Supreme Court Justice ,VCs to Party Event

The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has apologised for mistakenly listing a serving Supreme Court justice, several university vice-chancellors, and a deceased military officer as stakeholders in an invitation to a party meeting with Governor Bassey Otu.

In a statement signed by Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Edem Inyang, the party described the error as an “oversight” and asked the public to disregard the original invitation.

“The party sincerely tenders its unreserved apologies for this oversight and regrets any inconvenience this may have caused to the affected individuals and stakeholders,” the statement said.

The circulated invitation wrongly included the following names for the pre-congress stakeholders’ meeting held Monday, February 16, at the Calabar International Convention Centre:

Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim (serving Supreme Court Justice, listed under Obudu LGA)

Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong

Prof. Francisca Bassey (Vice-Chancellor, University of Calabar)

Prof. Patrick Asuquo (Vice-Chancellor, University of Education and Entrepreneurship)

The late Major General Edward Ushie Unimna (who died and was buried in 2025)

The inclusion of a sitting Supreme Court justice and vice-chancellors of federal and state universities triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning the implications for judicial and academic neutrality particularly as federal university VCs often serve in electoral roles requiring strict impartiality.

The mention of a deceased former general added to the public outcry on social media.

The APC confirmed that the affected names have been removed from the list and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting peaceful and transparent ward congresses in the state.
