City Boy Movement not about seeking political offices, says spokesperson

The spokesperson of the City Boy Movement, Emana Amawhe, has dismissed claims that the group is a political support platform formed to secure appointments for its members, insisting that the movement is open to Nigerians across different sectors and is focused on supporting President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Amawhe spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television, where she addressed widespread perceptions that the movement operates as an elitist club or a reward-based political structure.

“Most people out there believe that the City Boy Movement is an elitist club or some kind of reward support group system, so you work for Mr President so that eventually you can get some kind of reward,” she said.

She, however, rejected the narrative, stressing that the organisation cuts across social and professional backgrounds.

“However, the City Boy Movement cuts across artisans, creatives, entrepreneurs, politicians like myself, and generally is open to every Nigerian,” Amawhe said.

According to her, members of the movement are largely individuals who are already established in their various careers and are not dependent on political patronage.

“Most of the people who are in the rank and file from the top to the bottom of the structure of the City Boy Movement are people who are well accomplished in their respective fields, successful businessmen, professionals who are reputable,” she said.

Amawhe noted that many of the members, including herself, have independent careers and public records outside partisan politics.

“These are people who have first addresses, like myself. I ran an election two years ago. I believe that I have an address. I have an occupation outside being a politician,” she said.

She emphasised that the group should not be seen as a gathering of individuals seeking government appointments.

“So City Boy Movement is not about political jobbers seeking political appointments,” Amawhe stated.

While acknowledging that some members could eventually be considered for public office, she argued that such opportunities should be based strictly on competence and suitability.

“If appointments come out of it eventually, the question you should be asking is, does the cap fit? Is it the right peg plugged in the right hole, or is it just a way of rewarding people for political participation?” she said.

“I can assure you, that’s not what the City Boy Movement is all about.”
