Bus Catches Fire on Third Mainland Bridge, Causes Heavy Traffic Disruption in Lagos

A commercial bus burst into flames on the Third Mainland Bridge on Monday, February 2, 2026, leading to significant traffic gridlock on one of Nigeria's busiest roadways.

The incident occurred on the bridge axis inward towards Oworonshoki, with some reports placing the fire near the UNILAG Waterfront, heading towards Iyana Oworo.

The vehicle was completely gutted by the blaze, though the exact cause has not been officially disclosed.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the fire. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded swiftly, deploying officers to the scene to secure the area, manage vehicular flow, and ensure public safety.

In an official update shared on its social media platforms, LASTMA stated: “A bus caught fire on the Third Mainland Bridge. Our officers are on ground managing traffic and ensuring safety.”

Motorists were urged to exercise patience, adhere to traffic directives from officials, and explore alternative routes where possible to avoid the affected corridor.

Recovery operations were ongoing at the time of reporting, with efforts focused on clearing the scene and restoring normal movement.

The Third Mainland Bridge remains a critical artery connecting Lagos Mainland to the Island and other key areas, and vehicle fires or breakdowns frequently trigger severe congestion due to the high volume of daily commuters and limited diversion options.

Commuters heading through the axis on Monday afternoon faced extended delays as emergency teams worked to contain the situation and remove the affected bus.

Authorities have not yet provided further details on potential investigations into the fire's origin, but such incidents underscore ongoing concerns about vehicle maintenance and fire safety on major Lagos highways.

Travelers are advised to stay tuned to LASTMA and other official channels for real-time traffic updates.
