Abandoned newborn rescued in Anambra shop

A newborn baby has been found alive at a shop along Pope John Paul Seminary School Street, Umuodu Village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the baby was found alive in a bag at about 9 am Sunday by a nurse.

The nurse, identified as Mercy Iloanya, said she went to her shop, which is close to the shop where the baby was dropped, when she noticed the baby crying from a bag.

Iloanya said, “I immediately called the attention of a man I saw along the street, who confirmed that the baby was alive before we alerted the woman whose shop the baby was dropped in front of.

“When the owner of the shop came, we opened the bag and saw a written note accompanying the baby in which the mother appealed to the owner of the shop to help take care of the child.

“Good Samaritans who gathered to witness the situation quickly contributed baby items, while mostly women gasped in awe as they wondered why someone would do such a thing.”

However, the baby was thereafter taken to Anambra Police B Division, where an entry was made, and afterwards taken to the Intensive Care Unit at the Mother and Child Department of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, at the directive of the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
