ICPC Takes El-Rufai into Custody Following Release from EFCC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, is currently in its custody in connection with ongoing investigations.

In a statement issued late Wednesday by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications for the ICPC, the commission stated:

“The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) writes to state that Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna state, is in our custody as at close of work today, Wednesday the 18th day of February, 2026. Malam Nasiru El-Rufai is in the custody of the Commission in connection with investigations.”

The development comes shortly after el-Rufai was released on administrative bail from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, following his detention since Monday over separate corruption allegations related to his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023.

Reports indicate that upon leaving EFCC headquarters in Abuja, he was immediately taken into custody by operatives, leading to his transfer to the ICPC.

The ICPC has not disclosed specific details of its probe, but the case appears linked to broader scrutiny of el-Rufai's administration, including a 2024 indictment by the Kaduna State House of Assembly over alleged diversion of approximately N423–432 billion in public funds and money laundering.

Further updates are expected from the commission as investigations continue in line with its mandate.

El-Rufai's representatives have not yet issued a public response to the latest detention.
