Residents of several communities in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State are living in heightened anxiety after receiving a threatening letter allegedly from bandits warning of imminent attacks.
The letter, reportedly dropped at Ira Market on Thursday, was signed by a group identifying itself as the "Nigeria Terrorist Association" (NTA). It explicitly threatened raids on Ira, Inaja, Aho, and surrounding villages, claiming the group had relocated from Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara North to the Oyun area in Kwara South.
In the message, the writers boasted of their intentions, stating their motto as "we kill, we kidnapping and we distroyed," and warned residents to "be ready for us at any time any date," dismissing any local defenses or spiritual protections.
The letter's authenticity remains unverified by authorities, but its circulation has triggered widespread panic. Many residents in the affected communities have begun fleeing their homes, relocating to safer areas amid fears of violence similar to recent incidents in the state.
This development follows a pattern of threat letters sent to other parts of Kwara in recent days, including Dunshigogo in Kaiama LGA, heightening concerns over escalating banditry and insecurity in rural southern Kwara.
Local leaders and the Oyun Local Government Chairman have convened emergency meetings, while security agencies have been urged to increase patrols and investigate the threats promptly to avert potential attacks. Community stakeholders continue to call for urgent intervention to protect lives and property in the region.
