Armed bandits launched a brazen overnight attack on Agwara town, the headquarters of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State, setting fire to the Divisional Police Headquarters and a major church while operating with near-impunity for hours.
The assault began around 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, when the gunmen stormed the Agwara Police Station. According to the Niger State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the attackers engaged tactical police teams on ground before overpowering them reportedly using suspected dynamite or explosives to set the station ablaze.
After razing the police facility, the bandits moved to the First United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA), burning part of the building.
Videos circulating on social media captured the charred remains of both structures amid the chaos.Residents reported that the assailants abducted at least five people from the community during the raid, though their identities remain unconfirmed.
The attack caused widespread panic, forcing many families to flee into nearby bushes for safety and heightening fears of follow-up incursions.Security response was reportedly delayed, allowing the bandits to dominate the town for several hours before eventually withdrawing into surrounding forests.
No immediate casualties among security personnel or civilians were detailed in initial reports, though the destruction has left the community without a functional police presence and in a state of heightened vulnerability.
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident and vowed to pursue the perpetrators, urging residents to provide credible information to aid arrests and investigations.
