Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned that Nigeria’s hybrid election system combining manual and electronic transmission of results could lead to public confusion, undermine trust, and jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process.
Atiku made the remarks after a closed-door meeting with former military President Ibrahim Babangida in Minna, speaking to journalists on the recent amendments to the Electoral Act that allow a mix of manual and electronic result transmission by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He noted that Nigerians had expected a fully real-time electronic transmission system at all levels of election results, describing the adopted hybrid approach as falling short of expectations.
“The continued use of both manual and electronic systems in transmitting election results risks undermining public trust and creating confusion,” Atiku said.
“What we got instead was a mixture of electronic and manual transmission, which is going to cause more confusion and could jeopardise our electoral transmission system.”
The former VP stressed that a single-tier, real-time electronic system would be preferable to avoid chaos during collation and to enhance credibility.
Atiku also called on opposition political parties to unite and collectively advocate for electoral reforms, particularly pushing for mandatory full electronic transmission of results to safeguard democracy and prevent manipulation.
He warned that failure to address these issues could further erode public confidence and threaten electoral stability in the country.
