Troops of the Nigerian Army's 14 Brigade, Ohafia, have recovered two locally fabricated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) during clearance operations in a forest in Abia State.
The discovery was made on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at about 09:00 a.m., along the Umuchima pipeline route leading into the forest in Umuchinma, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade, Captain Mazinho Attah, the IEDs were constructed using 5kg gas cylinders packed with nails, water-gel explosives, two detonators, and electrical cables.
During the operation, troops also recovered four empty cartridge cases and two bags containing nails.
They successfully cleared a camp believed to belong to criminal elements.The operation followed credible intelligence from a suspect under investigation, who confessed to being an expert in such devices.
Brigadier General A.M. Dikko, the Brigade Commander, commended the troops for their professionalism, resilience, and determination.
The Army described the action as part of intensified efforts, including ahead of Operation Eastern Sanity to curb criminal activities linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South-East region.
Further exploitation of the Umuchima Forest is ongoing, with troops maintaining maximum vigilance.
The general security situation in the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility remains calm but unpredictable.
