The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured that it is tactfully and gradually addressing ongoing impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing the matter as an internal party issue being resolved through dialogue and the party's established mechanisms.
In an interview on Trust TV on Sunday, APC National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda stated that the party is actively engaging with relevant lawmakers to stabilize the situation in Rivers State.
"Are you hearing anything about the impeachment of Rivers State Governor Fubara again?" Yilwatda asked rhetorically. He emphasized that the APC differs from other parties by having robust internal processes for conflict resolution.
"We have a lot of mechanisms for resolving our internal issues. We have a lot of mechanisms that we have put in place that can resolve and self-heal the party when we have injuries, and that’s what we’re doing in Rivers," he said. "We’re self-healing the process in Rivers. We’re ensuring that we stabilize Rivers State and we maximize opportunities in Rivers State so that we can win and win overwhelmingly in the state."
The comments come amid renewed controversy in Rivers State, where members of the State House of Assembly have insisted on impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.
The crisis has been fueled by long-standing political tensions in the state, including disputes over control of the APC structure and governance issues.
The APC national leadership's intervention highlights efforts to prevent escalation, framing the impeachment push as something the party is containing internally rather than allowing to proceed unchecked.
Recent reports indicate that while the Assembly initiated notices earlier this year, judicial interventions and court restraints have slowed progress, with no active proceedings dominating headlines lately.Yilwatda's remarks reflect confidence in the party's ability to manage its affairs and position itself strongly for future elections in the oil-rich state.
