The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has raised concerns over efforts by groups it described as “secessionists” to undermine Governor Peter Mbah’s bid for a second term in 2027.
The party clarified that these groups are not advocating for the breakup of Nigeria but are pushing for the creation of a new state from Enugu, and some have allegedly sought to field alternative governorship candidates.
Dr. Ben Nwoye, caretaker committee chairman of the APC in the state, made the revelation on Monday while receiving members of the Asiwaju Renewed Mandate South East (ARMSE), led by Denge Josef Onoh, former spokesman for President Bola Tinubu in the South-East.
“Those in opposition to Governor Peter Mbah want to destabilize the state. There are groups recruiting candidates from Enugu East Senatorial zone and outside, even though they are not Biafra agitators. We support the creation of additional states, but not at the expense of destabilizing the state we already have,” Nwoye said.
Onoh emphasized that beyond campaigning for President Tinubu’s reelection, ARMSE members felt compelled to advocate for Governor Mbah’s second term to preserve political stability in Enugu.
He highlighted the state’s rotational governorship system, instituted by founding fathers such as Senator Jim Nwobodo, late Chief C.C. Onoh, and Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, which has ensured peaceful transitions and uninterrupted two-term tenures since 1999.
“Supporting Governor Mbah for another four years ensures that the rotational agreement remains intact and prevents instability that has affected other states in Nigeria,” Onoh said, pledging ARMSE’s full support for the governor.
The APC warned that attempts to disrupt the state’s political arrangement could be counterproductive given Governor Mbah’s performance and governance record.
