The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that the formal reception of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara into the party has been postponed as a deliberate strategic decision tied to the upcoming Ramadan fast, rather than any issues related to his leadership or control within the party.
In an interview on TVC Politics, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda explained that the party is currently focusing on completing the official welcoming of several governors who recently defected from northern states.
He emphasized the need to respect religious and cultural sensitivities in the North, where the majority of the population is Muslim and Ramadan—a period of fasting and heightened religious observance—is approaching.
“We're prioritising the governors from the North because Ramadan is close... so we pleaded that we finish that before going to the South,” Yilwatda stated. “It has nothing to do with Sim not having control.”
The chairman dismissed speculations that the delay reflects internal friction or doubts about Governor Fubara's authority in Rivers State, insisting the postponement is purely logistical and sensitive to regional dynamics.
He noted that the party aims to conclude northern engagements first to avoid any unintended disruptions during the holy month, after which attention will shift southward.
Governor Fubara defected to the APC late last year amid ongoing political realignments in Rivers State. The APC leadership has affirmed his status as a key member, assuring that his official welcome will proceed at the appropriate time once the northern priorities are addressed.
This approach, according to Yilwatda, demonstrates the party's commitment to inclusive and considerate political planning across Nigeria's diverse regions.
