The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has leveled serious allegations against Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing his administration of squandering approximately N2.9 billion on the recent 50th anniversary celebrations of Oyo State.
In a statement issued by the party's Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, the APC claimed that the funds were improperly utilized for the milestone event, which marked 50 years since the state's creation in 1976.
The opposition party specifically highlighted that N90 million was allegedly deducted from the federal allocation of each of the 33 local government councils in the state to finance the anniversary activities.
An additional undisclosed sum was reportedly drawn from the state government's coffers for the same purpose.
The statement questioned the justification for the total expenditure, estimated at over N3 billion, and criticized several aspects of the celebrations.
It asked pointedly: “What did they do with over N3 billion? Was it the huge amount [spent on] the misplaced air show, lopsided award conferment, colour-riot Ankara uniform for PDP members and one-man show novelty soccer match that justified the amount?”
The APC's accusations come shortly after the Makinde-led government concluded a series of events to commemorate Oyo @ 50, which included thanksgiving services, carnivals, and other activities emphasizing the state's progress and unity across administrations.
No immediate response or denial from Governor Makinde or his administration was mentioned in the statement.
The claims reflect ongoing political tensions between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and the opposition APC ahead of future electoral cycles.
