Senate President Godswill Akpabio has showered praise on President Bola Tinubu, expressing regret that he did not serve as a state governor during Tinubu's administration.
Akpabio highlighted the benefits of Tinubu's economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and ongoing tax reforms, which he said have significantly increased revenue allocations to states.
“We thank you for the tax reforms. Thank you for removing fuel subsidy. How I wish I was a governor under you. Most of them say they collect four times what we used to collect,” Akpabio stated.
The Senate President made the remarks while appreciating Tinubu's leadership and defending the upper chamber against criticisms of being a "rubber-stamp" legislature.
He emphasized that senators diligently review all submissions and legislation to prioritize Nigerians' best interests, even when initial public perception differs.
The comments reflect growing alignment within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, amid discussions on the impacts of recent fiscal reforms on state finances and national development.
Akpabio's statement has drawn varied reactions online, with some viewing it as strong endorsement of Tinubu's policies, while others critique the economic hardships linked to subsidy removal.
