The Abia State Government has approved the implementation and payment of an adjusted minimum wage for teachers and staff of the State Education Management Board (SEMB), as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of education workers.
The announcement was made by Kenechukwu Nwosu, Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Basic and Secondary Education, in a statement issued on Sunday in Umuahia.
Nwosu explained that the approval reflects Governor Otti’s administration’s strong commitment to ensuring education personnel receive their rightful entitlements promptly and without further delays.
He recalled that the state had approved the revised national minimum wage in 2023, in line with federal directives, though some workers faced delays in salary adjustments, consequential benefits, and related allowances.
The latest decision aims to clear pending entitlements and achieve full compliance with the updated wage structure for teachers and SEMB staff.
According to reports from other sources, the adjusted minimum wage has already been fully incorporated into the January 2026 salaries for these categories of workers.
In addition to the wage adjustment, steps are being taken to address other outstanding benefits, including the processing and payment of leave allowances for teachers and SEMB personnel.
The government is also working to settle payments for educators whose services were previously extended but affected by administrative issues.
Nwosu praised Governor Otti for consistently prioritising the education sector and the welfare of teachers and school administrators across the state.
The development has been welcomed in education circles, with some reports indicating jubilation among affected workers following the resolution of long-standing salary-related concerns.
