A coalition of political figures has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections to Southern Nigeria, describing it as essential for equity, national unity, and building a viable opposition challenge.
The Coalition for Good Governance (CGG) comprising former national party chairmen and ex-presidential candidates from all six geopolitical zones made the appeal during a press briefing in Abuja.
They argued that zoning to the South is a "strategic necessity" given Nigeria's ongoing polarization, economic hardship, and the need to heal regional divides.
“The nation is deeply polarised and economically distressed. The path to victory and national healing lies in fairness. Zoning the ticket to the South is both morally compelling and electorally strategic,” the coalition declared.
The group cautioned that leaving the zoning question unresolved could spark damaging internal rifts within the ADC and erode its credibility as a genuine alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2027.
Beyond zoning, the CGG fiercely condemned recent amendments to the Electoral Act, recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
They singled out the removal of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results, branding it a "dangerous regression" and "electoral banditry" effectively a "civilian equivalent of a coup."
“Electronic transmission safeguards data integrity, reduces human interference, and restores public trust. Any resistance to it is resistance to transparency,” the coalition stated, accusing the National Assembly of enabling democratic erosion.
They urged the international community to pressure Nigerian authorities to reverse these provisions.
The statement also expressed grave concern over what it described as a drift toward a one-party state under the APC, highlighted by recent high-profile defections from opposition governors and lawmakers.
“A one-party state eliminates accountability, suppresses dissent, and weakens constitutional democracy. Nigeria must not descend into political absolutism,” the CGG warned, adding that persistent electoral flaws could push opposition forces to reconsider participating in the 2027 polls altogether.
Signed by CGG National Chairman Okey Chikwendu and National Secretary Attah Ikeleji Ikeleji, the statement reaffirmed the coalition's commitment to democratic principles, fairness, and national cohesion.
This push comes amid broader tensions in Nigeria's opposition space, where parties like the ADC position themselves to challenge the APC in 2027 while zoning debates, electoral transparency, and fears of ruling-party dominance continue to dominate discussions.
