The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) has officially announced that local government elections across the state's 17 local government areas will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The announcement came during a stakeholders' meeting where Mohammed Grema Nguru, Permanent Member 1 of the commission, revealed that Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved the date for the polls, which will elect chairmen and councilors.
Nguru emphasized YSIEC's commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections, urging all stakeholders including political parties, security agencies, and community leaders to cooperate for a successful process.
This marks a key step in preparations for the upcoming local council elections, following previous polls in 2024.
The commission called for active engagement to ensure a smooth and historic electoral exercise in the state.
