Wike Warns APC Secretary Basiru: Don't Take Our Tinubu Support for Granted

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern caution to the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, urging him to be mindful of his public statements regarding Rivers State politics.

In a strongly worded message, Wike emphasised the critical role his faction plays in bolstering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's support base, saying: “Don’t take our support for President Tinubu for granted. You have to be very careful with the statements you make.”

The former Rivers State governor further warned: “When Mr. President comes back, when I see the Minister of Blue Economy, I will tell them to tell him: Carry your hand to Rivers State if your hand burns, don’t say na me burn am”, a vivid Pidgin English expression implying that any interference in Rivers affairs would have severe consequences, and no one should blame him for the fallout.

Wike declared unequivocally: “I can challenge anybody this state is a no-go area.”

The remarks come amid escalating tensions within the Rivers State chapter of the APC, where Basiru has publicly criticised party officials aligned with Wike for disrespecting Governor Siminalayi Fubara and has reaffirmed the party's support for the governor ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but has been a key ally of President Tinubu, appears to be pushing back against efforts by the APC national leadership to consolidate power behind Fubara, whom the party has endorsed for a second term.
