US AFRICOM Deputy Commander Visits Abuja to Launch Counterterrorism Working Group

Lt. Gen. John Brennan, Deputy Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), arrived in Abuja today to meet with senior Nigerian leaders and formally inaugurate the first U.S.-Nigeria Working Group, a new bilateral mechanism designed to strengthen coordination, promote accountability, and drive joint action against terrorism while safeguarding vulnerable communities.

The high-level visit underscores the deepening security partnership between the United States and Nigeria as both nations confront persistent threats from terrorist groups, including ISIS-affiliated factions and al-Qaeda-linked insurgents operating across the northeast, northwest, and north-central regions.

During the launch, officials highlighted the group’s role in aligning strategies to disrupt terrorist financing and logistics, improve intelligence sharing, investigate attacks, and hold perpetrators accountable. The framework also prioritizes protecting civilians, particularly from abductions, killings, and forced displacement that continue to affect communities, including religious minorities.

The initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval and builds on existing cooperation, including Nigerian military operations such as Hadin Kai in the Lake Chad Basin area and Fasan Yamma in the northwest and north-central zones, which have seen recent successes in neutralizing hundreds of terrorists and degrading their operational capabilities.

The working group provides a structured platform for sustained dialogue and joint planning, complementing broader U.S.-Nigeria engagements on regional stability, religious freedom, and civilian protection. It aligns with ongoing high-level discussions involving Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and U.S. officials, including Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker.

Both sides described the visit and launch as a concrete step toward shared objectives: weakening terrorist networks, interdicting weapons flows, and fostering long-term security that supports economic growth, trade, investment, and energy cooperation in West Africa.
