Turaki-led PDP Denies Asking Members to Pay N10,000 to Fund Party Activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of National Chairman Kabiru Turaki has firmly denied reports suggesting that it has imposed or requested a compulsory N10,000 contribution from its members to fund party activities.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the claims particularly a misleading headline from a publication titled “PDP Calls on Members to Contribute N10,000 Each in Bid to Fund Party Activities” as false, misleading, and a misrepresentation of the facts.

Ememobong clarified that his recent comments during a media interview, which referenced the N10,000 figure, were taken out of context.

The remarks were made in response to a question about the party's funding strategy amid recent defections by some governors. He quoted his original statement verbatim:

“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice. We are returning to that voluntary model. For example, if 60 million Nigerians give N10,000 each, that’s a huge sum.”

Ememobong emphasized that the N10,000 amount was purely illustrative, a hypothetical example to highlight the immense potential of widespread, grassroots voluntary support and not a directive, fixed levy, or mandatory requirement.

“Let it be stated unequivocally: there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP,” the statement read.

The PDP reiterated its commitment to a voluntary, people-driven funding model, similar to the party's founding days, and urged members and the public to disregard the sensationalized reports while continuing to support the party in ways they find appropriate and convenient.

This clarification comes as the Turaki-led PDP faction continues efforts to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of future elections, amid ongoing internal challenges and leadership disputes within the broader PDP structure.
