Tunji-Ojo Engages Turkish Interior Minister on Security Talks During Tinubu's Visit

Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his state visit to Türkiye, where he conducted sideline bilateral talks with Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in security, law enforcement training, and efforts to address irregular migration. Particular attention was given to joint approaches in combating terrorist organizations, highlighting mutual interests in countering transnational threats.

Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the exploration of opportunities for shared gains, building on the strong bilateral relationship to advance these priority areas. He shared details of the meeting on X, including photos from the engagement.

The talks complement the broader goals of President Tinubu's visit, which started on January 26 and featured high-level engagements with Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

The state visit prioritized enhanced diplomatic, economic, and defense collaboration, with Türkiye offering support for Nigeria's counter-terrorism initiatives through training and intelligence cooperation.

Multiple memoranda of understanding were signed across defense, education, trade, and investment sectors, targeting a bilateral trade increase to $5 billion.

Nigeria continues to grapple with security issues from groups like Boko Haram in its northeast, while Türkiye brings extensive expertise in terrorism countermeasures and migration management. The interior ministers' dialogue signals deepening strategic partnership, following recent interactions between the nations' officials.
