Troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) successfully recovered a significant stash of 12.7mm ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri on January 2, 2026, following a tip-off from alert residents.
The operation began around 3:00 p.m. after locals reported spotting suspicious metallic objects in a drainage channel.
Military forces, working alongside Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, quickly secured the site and conducted a detailed search.
The recovery yielded 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including several live rounds, along with concealed power banks. Efforts continue to fully drain the channel to check for any additional hidden items.
No injuries or incidents occurred during the recovery, and the area remains calm under heightened security patrols by troops, police, and other agencies to prevent any attempts by insurgents to reclaim the materials.
Officials attribute the success to ongoing intelligence-driven operations, persistent pressure on terrorist elements, and vital community cooperation especially in the wake of recent arrests and neutralizations of suspected bombers.
The military has once again called on residents to stay vigilant and report any unusual objects or activities, emphasizing that public support is key to maintaining security in Nigeria's North-East region.
