The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the deployment of troops and intelligence assets to secure the safe rescue of worshippers abducted from Kurmin Wali in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, when gunmen attacked three churches in the remote community during services, abducting over 160 worshippers (initial reports varied, with figures around 166–172 cited by community leaders and church elders, though some later escaped).
The abduction initially faced denial from local police and officials, who described early reports as unverified or false, but authorities later confirmed the attack after verification.
In a statement, Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, acknowledged community concerns and apprehensions from displaced residents.
He reaffirmed that rescuing all kidnapped victims remains a top priority for the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
"The military has taken note of the worries expressed by affected communities," Onoja stated. "Substantial efforts are underway, including coordinated operations to dismantle the criminal networks responsible, while specific details remain confidential for operational security.
"The DHQ emphasized unwavering commitment to protecting lives, reuniting victims with families, and restoring order in the area amid ongoing banditry in parts of Kaduna.
This follows related actions by the Nigeria Police Force, which deployed tactical units and intelligence resources under directives from Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has visited the community, pledged collaboration with security agencies, and promised support including medical care for injured residents.
No rescues have been publicly reported yet, and families continue to await updates. Authorities urge patience and cooperation while operations intensify.
