The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raided an illegal operation producing counterfeit Goya oil at Oke-Arin market in Idumota, Lagos, and dismantled elements of an alcohol counterfeiting network in the city.
During the enforcement action, NAFDAC uncovered burnt palm oil mixed with colouring agents and repackaged into plastic (PET) bottles to mimic the authentic imported Goya oil.
Genuine Goya oil is sold only in original glass bottles by authorized distributors, any in plastic is unlicensed and fake.
Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, issued a strong warning: "Goya oil sold in plastic bottles is fake and poses severe public health dangers due to toxic additives."
He noted the product is commonly used for cooking, religious anointing, and skincare, heightening risks especially for vulnerable groups.
In related seizures, authorities arrested a suspect for distributing adulterated alcoholic drinks and recovered fake alcohol bottles, sachets, and packaging materials.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians, including churches and market traders, to avoid PET-bottled Goya oil, buy only from verified sources, and report suspicions immediately.
