A series of devastating road accidents over the weekend has claimed the lives of 22 people in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kaduna State, raising fresh concerns about road safety, speeding, and vehicle maintenance across Nigeria.
In the Federal Capital Territory, 12 people were killed on the spot on Sunday when a truck fully loaded with coal lost control and crashed into bystanders at Gada-Biyu village along the Abuja–Lokoja highway.
The victims included four adult males, two adult females, four male children, and two female children. Many of those killed were local residents of Gada-Biyu waiting by the roadside to board vehicles.
Three other individuals sustained injuries and were taken to Abaji General Hospital for treatment.FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Felix Theman, confirmed that the accident occurred around 11:47 a.m. and involved three vehicles in addition to the truck: an 18-seater Sharon bus and two Volkswagen Golf cars.
The truck driver and his conductor fled the scene immediately after the crash. The FRSC noted that this was the second reported incident involving the same truck on this highway, and the command plans to meet with the company’s management to address the recurring issue.
Authorities have also directed the Yangoji Unit Command of the FRSC to relocate roadside parking and passenger pick-up points at Gada-Biyu to safer locations.
In a separate incident in Kaduna State, 10 people died in a crash along the Kachia-Jaba Road on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
The accident involved a Tundra Hilux pickup (registration KWL 212 TS) and a commercial Volkswagen Golf (AU 688 DAL). FRSC Kaduna Sector officials stated that a tyre burst caused the multiple-vehicle collision.
Nine people died at the scene, while one of the five injured individuals later succumbed to injuries at Kachia General Hospital.
The remaining four injured persons are receiving treatment, and the bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary. A total of 17 people were involved in the crash.
The FRSC continues to call on all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and safety regulations to help prevent such avoidable loss of life.
