A devastating fire outbreak at a residential building on Bola Street in Oyingbo, Lagos Mainland, has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman and caused extensive damage to multiple homes and businesses.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire started in one of the rooms of the bungalow at No. 8 Bola Street, off Kadara Street, on Friday, January 16, 2026, around 11:43 a.m.
The blaze quickly spread to eight other rooms, a mini-flat, and six adjacent shops, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Emergency responders, including LASEMA’s Onipanu Rescue Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and officials from the Lagos Mainland Local Government, swiftly arrived at the scene.
After conducting a risk assessment and cordoning off the area, they worked for several hours to bring the inferno under control.
The remains of the elderly victim were recovered and handed over to her family.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Authorities have called on residents of densely populated areas like Oyingbo to take proactive fire safety measures to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
