They’re Obsessed with Atiku, Obi – Shaibu Hits Presidency Over Ambassadorial Reversal

Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has accused the presidency of incompetence and obsession with political rivals Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, following the abrupt announcement and immediate withdrawal of an ambassadorial appointment.

In a series of posts on X on Saturday, Shaibu criticised the administration for what he described as its 11th public reversal of an official decision, this time involving Usman Dakingari’s nomination as Nigeria’s ambassador to Turkey.

According to Shaibu, Dakingari was publicly announced as ambassador, only for the presidency to retract the appointment minutes later without any explanation.

He labeled the incident as another example of administrative chaos that breeds confusion, uncertainty, and disrespect for public institutions.

“This is the 11th public reversal by this administration. Eleven times of confusion, uncertainty, and institutional disrespect,” Shaibu wrote.

He further alleged that while Nigerians grapple with economic hardship, the presidency remains fixated on Atiku and Labour Party’s Peter Obi instead of demonstrating basic governance competence.

“They’ve appointed the dead before. Now they appointed Dakingari an ambassador and withdrew it before lunchtime at ‘Iya Oyo’ without explanation,” he stated, referencing past reported blunders where deceased individuals were named for positions.

Shaibu mocked the handling of official communications, tagging presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga and noting:

“Governance is not a WhatsApp broadcast that can be simply deleted. Serious governments explain themselves.”

He emphasised the need for thorough verification before announcements and clear accountability when errors occur: “A government that cannot keep track of its own announcements cannot be trusted to run a country.”

He added that serious governments “double-check before announcing appointments” and avoid embarrassing appointees or pretending nothing happened after reversals.

The latest incident has reignited criticisms of the Tinubu administration’s appointment processes, with Shaibu arguing it reflects a broader pattern of carelessness and distraction from core governance duties amid ongoing political rivalries.

No immediate response has been issued by the presidency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or Bayo Onanuga regarding the reversal of Usman Dakingari’s appointment or Shaibu’s allegations.

The development comes against the backdrop of previous controversies surrounding ambassadorial nominations and public pardons under the current government.
