Residents in the Zugurma area of Mashegu Local Government Area, Niger State, have uncovered a suspected missile warhead, prompting an immediate response from security agencies.
Local sources reported that community members spotted the object in a bushy area and quickly notified authorities.
The device is believed to be a Tomahawk missile warhead, potentially linked to recent U.S.-launched strikes against Islamic State targets in northwest Nigeria late last year.
Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident. He stated that on January 5, 2026, around 2:00 pm, police received a report of the suspicious object.
Police operatives from the Ibbi Division promptly secured the site, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit was deployed for further assessment and recovery.
"The item is currently under investigation, and any further developments will be communicated to the public," Abiodun said.
This discovery comes amid reports of multiple unexploded ordnance findings in rural areas following U.S. military operations in the region.
Authorities continue to urge residents to report any similar findings without handling them to avoid risks.
