Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has dismissed United States President Donald Trump’s recent comments on Nigeria’s security challenges as insincere, describing the much-publicised “Christian genocide” narrative as a calculated emotional ploy rather than a genuine concern.
In a series of posts on his official X account on Friday, Sowore reacted to Trump’s January 2026 statement acknowledging that Muslims are also victims of insecurity in Nigeria, a shift from the US President’s earlier focus on attacks against Christians.
The comments followed US airstrikes targeting ISIL positions on December 25, 2025.Sowore accused Trump of using the “Christian genocide” claim as a pretext for potential resource-driven military interventions, particularly in oil-rich regions, rather than any real commitment to protecting persecuted groups.
“Emperor Donald Trump wakes up, intoxicated by U.S. military power, scans the globe, and fixes his gaze on any part of the earth rich in oil or so-called rare earth minerals,” Sowore wrote.
“The narrative used to justify [intervention] is secondary; even then, it only needs to match the gullibility of the intended audience.”He further described the “Nigerian Christian genocide” framing as “a calculated ruse, crafted to occupy a popular emotional space,” asserting that it had successfully stirred global emotions.
Sowore also criticised Trump personally, stating that the US President “does not serve the God of the Christian Bible,” “does not love his neighbor as himself,” and “loves only himself and his account balance. Everything else is theatre.”
The Sahara Reporters publisher renewed his earlier warning, first issued in November 2025 against any US military action in Nigeria.
At the time, Trump had threatened to deploy forces “guns-a-blazing” if the Nigerian government failed to stop what he called the killing of Christians by Islamist groups.
Sowore cautioned that history demonstrates the dangers of such foreign interventions, pointing to the long-term instability left behind in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.
“The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before. They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to reject the notion of external rescue, emphasising that lasting solutions must come from within through accountable leadership, institutional reform, justice, and an end to corruption and violence.
“Donald Trump does not care about Nigerians, not Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our deliverance will never come from abroad; it must come from within, through real leadership and national renewal,” Sowore concluded.
The activist’s remarks follow Trump’s earlier designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious persecution, amid ongoing debates about foreign involvement in the country’s complex security crisis.
