Sowore Appears in Court Over Alleged Defamatory Posts About President Tinubu

Human rights activist, former presidential candidate, and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja today for the commencement of his trial on a five-count charge brought by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The charges, originally filed in September 2025, accuse Sowore of cybercrimes, criminal defamation, and incitement related to social media posts on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. In the posts from August 2025, Sowore allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as "a criminal" while criticizing statements made by the President during an official visit to Brazil, where Tinubu claimed his administration had eradicated corruption.

The DSS alleges that these statements were false, malicious, and intended to cause a breakdown of law and order, particularly among those with differing views on the President's character.

The charges invoke provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Criminal Code Act.Sowore, who pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in December 2025, was granted bail on self-recognition by Justice Mohammed Umar.

The judge, however, issued a stern warning that any further statements deemed detrimental to national security or inciting the public against President Tinubu could lead to revocation of the bail.
