Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance and peaceful coexistence, asserting that the country has the potential to become one of the world’s greatest nations if its citizens prioritise unity over division.
Shettima delivered the message on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Jacob Gyang Buba, at his palace in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
“We are all connected one way or the other. We must, therefore, continue to live together. What binds us together supersedes what separates us,” the Vice President said.
He described traditional rulers as vital custodians of peace and key stabilising forces in society, noting that beyond preserving culture and tradition, monarchs play an essential role in promoting harmony among diverse communities.
The visit coincided with Shettima’s attendance at the grand reception of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other prominent politicians into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He commended the cordial relationship between APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, an indigene of Plateau State and Governor Mutfwang, describing their political realignment as a welcome development.
“The National Chairman, who was the opponent of the Governor in the last election, has now pledged full support. With their coming together, Plateau State will enjoy more dividends of democracy and greater peace,” Shettima said.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration would strengthen peace, stability, and development in the state and contribute positively to national progress, stressing that “there can be no development without peace.”
Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, praised the strong working relationship between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, expressing confidence that their partnership would continue to deliver benefits for the nation.
The Gbong Gwom Jos welcomed the Vice President and his entourage, calling for intensified security measures and genuine reconciliation efforts across Nigeria to address ongoing challenges in Plateau State and other parts of the country.
“We appreciate the efforts of our security agencies in ensuring peace, but we appeal for more security and genuine reconciliation across the country,” the monarch said.
He emphasised that both Islam and Christianity teach peace and reject violence, urging Nigerians to respect one another and live in harmony.
The royal father also described the recent political realignment in Plateau State as a positive step forward for the state and the nation.
The Vice President’s delegation included APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Idris Wase, members of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, and other prominent indigenes of the state.
Shettima thanked the Plateau State Government and its people for the warm reception accorded to him and his team.
