Aiyedatiwa, Hamzat Push for Inclusive, Merit-Driven APC Constitution

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called for comprehensive reforms to the All Progressives Congress (APC) constitution, emphasizing inclusivity, strengthened internal democracy, and leadership selection based on merit, service, and integrity.

Speaking at the APC Southwest Zonal Public Hearing on constitutional amendments held at the Government House Banquet Hall in Akure on January 28, 2026, Aiyedatiwa stressed that political parties must build robust internal institutions to endure beyond electoral victories.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Executive Committee for establishing the APC Constitution Amendment Committee to review and enhance the 2022 constitution (as amended), describing the move as an act of statesmanship and foresight.

“A constitution that excludes voices ultimately weakens the institution it seeks to guide,” Aiyedatiwa said.

“The APC of the future must continue to be a party where rules are clear, processes are credible, participation is guaranteed, and leadership emerges through merit, service, and integrity.”

The governor commended the amendment committee's chairman, members, and secretariat for their dedication, as well as party delegates and stakeholders for their valuable memoranda and submissions, which he said would shape a stronger party framework.

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Femi Hamzat echoed the call for reforms, urging delegates to see the process as an opportunity to bolster the APC's democratic credentials, promote internal cohesion, and ensure equitable representation for women, youth, and special interest groups.

Hamzat emphasized the importance of active member participation in decision-making to enhance the party's responsiveness and accountability.

In his remarks, Ondo State APC caretaker chairman Ade Adetimehin referenced the recent defection of former deputy governor Agboola Ajayi and vowed that the state would not only match but exceed its previous electoral performance in the 2027 elections by doubling the party's vote tally.

Miriam Odinaka Onuoha, the Southeast representative on the Constitution Amendment Committee, noted that the committee was formed under the party's national leadership, in collaboration with governors including the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.

APC National Vice Chairman (Southwest) Dr. Isaac Kekemeke encouraged vigorous participation in the ongoing e-registration exercise and called for deliberations on key issues such as party membership, financial contributions, candidate selection processes, and safeguards for women, youth, and vulnerable groups.

He further highlighted the urgency of harmonizing various versions of the APC constitution to resolve inconsistencies and eliminate confusion within the National Working Committee.

The hearing reflects the APC's ongoing efforts to refine its governing document ahead of future elections, fostering a more unified, inclusive, and democratic structure.
