Vice President Kashim Shettima today represented President Bola Tinubu at the solemn proceedings for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja.
President Tinubu is currently in the United Arab Emirates participating in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026, a major global summit focused on sustainable development, energy transition, and climate action.
This marks the second consecutive year that Vice President Shettima has stood in for the President at this important national event, having done so in 2025 as well.
Organized annually by the Ministry of Defence, the AFCRD honors the gallant men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.
This includes those who fell during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, international peace support operations, and ongoing internal security operations, particularly the sustained battle against terrorism that continues to challenge Nigeria's unity and stability.
The ceremony also celebrates serving personnel and veterans, while raising awareness and support for their welfare and that of families who lost loved ones in service. It serves as a poignant reminder of the courage, professionalism, and dedication required to safeguard the country's peace.
Nigeria originally observed Remembrance Day on November 11 in line with Commonwealth traditions, commemorating the armistice that ended the First World War at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
However, the date was shifted to January 15 to better reflect the nation's historical context, specifically marking the formal end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970 and aligning the observance with Nigeria's unique experiences.
This year's commemoration carries added significance amid recent successes by the Armed Forces in the North-East and other regions.
The event highlights the bravery of troops confronting security threats, allowing citizens to live in greater safety.
The Federal Government expressed profound gratitude to these heroes and urged all Nigerians, private sector organizations, and the public to generously support the welfare of serving personnel, wounded veterans, and bereaved families not just during this remembrance period, but throughout the year.
As the nation pauses to lay wreaths and reflect, the AFCRD stands as a powerful symbol of national unity, sacrifice, and appreciation for those who defend Nigeria's sovereignty.
