The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has formed a nine-member peace committee to mediate the protracted political feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike.
The committee, announced in a press release on Wednesday, January 14, aims to engage relevant stakeholders and propose sustainable solutions to restore lasting peace in the state amid escalating tensions.
Chaired by His Majesty (Dr.) Suanu T. Y. Baridam, with His Majesty Eze Barr. Nwachukwu Nnam Obi as co-chairman, the panel includes prominent traditional rulers such as His Majesty Eze Uchechukwu Isaiah-Elikwu, His Majesty Eze Leslie Eke, His Majesty Dr. Samuel Amaechi, His Majesty Dr. Felix Otuwarikpo, His Majesty Eze Barr. Onyekachi Amaonwu, HRH King Agolia Aboko, and HRH Eze Nwankwo Nwankwo. Barr. Darlington Owiriwa will serve as secretary.
The statement, signed by the council's chairman, His Majesty Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo (Eze Oha Apara IV of Apara Kingdom), urged citizens, factional supporters, social media users, and the general public to exercise restraint and avoid comments or actions that could inflame tensions or lead to a breach of the peace.
The ongoing crisis stems from a deep-seated rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who has accused the governor of breaching a peace agreement signed before President Bola Tinubu lifted the state of emergency in Rivers.
Wike-aligned lawmakers in the state assembly have also initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations including unauthorized spending of state funds though recent reports indicate several lawmakers are now withdrawing support for the move in favor of dialogue.
This intervention by the traditional rulers comes at a critical time, with the Rivers State House of Assembly expected to reconvene on January 15 to address the impeachment issue further.
The council's effort is widely seen as a timely step toward de-escalating the conflict and promoting reconciliation ahead of future political developments in the oil-rich state.
