Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has stated that he will only consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) if there are clear assurances about the future of the current Kano State government and the welfare of his supporters.
Speaking on Wednesday at his residence in Kano during a meeting with leaders and members from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, along with key figures of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Kwankwaso stressed the need for firm commitments.
“I didn’t say I won’t join APC, but we must first be clearly assured of the future of the Kano state government before we join,” he declared.
He emphasized protecting the political structure built under the NNPP and Kwankwasiyya, including the positions of lawmakers, party officials, and grassroots supporters.
“What will be the fate of our lawmakers and other supporters before we agree to defect?” Kwankwaso asked, pointing to past experiences where his group helped form governments only to be sidelined afterward.“
Up till now, no one has given me a clear assurance that we will be allowed to retain our government and continue with our political structure,” he added.
The statement reflects ongoing political calculations in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections, where Kwankwaso’s influence remains a major factor in northern Nigerian politics.
