The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has stated that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is deeply disappointed by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s decision to abandon the party for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Speaking on Channels Television programme, Politics Today, NNPP national spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, said the governor’s defection represents a serious violation of trust, not only against the party but also against the people of Kano State who voted overwhelmingly for the NNPP.
Johnson explained that the feeling of betrayal extends beyond Kwankwaso, stressing that Kano residents who supported the party in the 2023 governorship election were equally let down.
“Of course, he feels betrayed, but this goes beyond Senator Kwankwaso. The people of Kano suffered what they described as eight years of poor governance and turned out massively to entrust the NNPP with power through Kwankwaso’s leadership,” he said.
He further noted that the NNPP went into the election without an existing political framework in the state, yet still emerged victorious because of strong grassroots backing.
“We had no councillors, no local government chairmen, yet the people voted NNPP from the ground up. They stayed with Abba Kabir Yusuf through the tribunal, the Court of Appeal and even up to the Supreme Court,” he said.
Johnson maintained that Yusuf’s defection to the APC, carried out without prior consultation with voters, amounts to a disregard for the mandate given by the electorate.
“Returning power to the same party that was voted out after eight years, without consulting the people, is a betrayal of trust, no matter how it is presented,” Johnson added.
