Presidential Aides Shares AI-Generated Images of Tinubu-Kagame Meeting in Paris

Images depicting Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in a private meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris have gone viral, but they bear the watermark of Grok, an AI image generation tool developed by xAI.

The photos were posted on Sunday on President Tinubu's official X account and shared by aides, including Special Assistant on Digital/New Media Dada Olusegun and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga.

In the accompanying caption, President Tinubu described the encounter: "This afternoon, I had a private lunch with H. E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to discuss the current state of world affairs and advancing Africa in an ever-changing global landscape."

Multiple Nigerian media outlets reported the private lunch as having taken place in Paris on January 4, with the leaders discussing global affairs and Africa's interests.

The meeting occurred during Tinubu's ongoing trip to Europe, which began on December 28, 2025, as part of his end-of-year break ahead of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.

However, eagle-eyed social media users quickly spotted the "Grok" watermark on the images, indicating they were artificially generated.

The use of AI to illustrate the reportedly real diplomatic engagement has sparked questions and criticism online, with some users questioning why generated images were used for an event described as factual.

The presidency has not issued a statement addressing the AI-generated nature of the photos or explaining the decision to use them.
