The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State has announced a significant boost in membership, gaining over 5,000 new members in the days following the formal defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to the party.
The influx comes in the wake of Obi's high-profile move to the ADC on December 31, 2025, during a rally in Enugu, where he was joined by several prominent South-East politicians, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who also switched from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the ADC.
Party officials in Abia attributed the surge to Obi's influence and the growing appeal of the ADC as a platform for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"Peter Obi's entrance has energised our base and attracted thousands seeking a credible alternative for national rescue," a state ADC spokesperson said.
Obi, who described his move as formalising long-standing involvement in the ADC-led coalition, called for broader opposition collaboration to address Nigeria's challenges.
His defection has been hailed by coalition supporters as a step toward strengthening the party, with similar membership drives reported in other South-East states.
